Kathy is the registered psychologist who works as a generalist counsellor in two medical practices in the local community as well as onsite at our Clinic. She has a keen interest in the psychological aspects of lifestyle related health management and has worked at the Lifestyle Unit at Prince of Wales and St Vincent’s Hospitals providing programs for smoking cessation, alcohol, stress and dietary interventions. In recent years, Kathy’s focus has been on disordered eating, working clinically with patients in the general practice setting and as a counsellor on a National Helpline for eating disorders. Her work involves addressing the psychological and interpersonal aspects of disordered eating and weight management with an emphasis on working towards sustained change in awareness, mindset and behaviours. She also understands the importance of addressing other issues that may be impacting on unhealthy patterns of eating such as low mood, anxiety, trauma, stress, substance misuse such as alcohol, and personality issues.
Kathy is person-centred and follows ‘what works’ for the individual in her approach. She draws on cognitive-behavioural, emotion-focussed and interpersonal strategies as she understands that weight and lifestyle management is multi-layered and addressing what underlies unhealthy patterns of eating is key to sustaining long term change.
