Gastric Balloon
What is the gastric balloon?
The gastric balloon is a non-operative procedure to assist in weight loss.
The silicone-based balloon is placed via a gastroscope through your mouth and into the stomach. Once it’s in the right position, the balloon is filled with blue-dyed fluid to allow expansion. The presence of the balloon within the stomach helps with satiety and also portion control. The balloon remains in your stomach for about 6-12 months. After that, we remove the balloon through another endoscopic procedure.
How does a gastric balloon help you lose weight?
Gastric balloons help to reduce your appetite and make you feel full more quickly after eating. They’re one part of weight loss, alongside sustainable dietary and lifestyle change.
- Eat less
- Feel full faster
- Increase your activity levels
- Find non-food ways to relieve stress or provide comfort

Our comprehensive bariatric care extends beyond balloon therapy and incorporates life-long weight loss support through a multi-pronged approach involving ongoing lifestyle adjustments, medical therapy and/or further endoscopic/ surgical modalities if required.
How much weight can I lose?
The amount of weight loss to be expected varies depending on the balloon used.
In general, most gastric balloons will achieve an average of around 15-20% total body weight loss. That means a person weighing 100 kg could expect to lose 10-20 kg.
